For fire and moisture, rock wool should be used. It is made from compressed crushed stone. It doesn’t absorb moisture and is more fire-resistant than fiberglass. On commercial projects with a large number of people in the building, building codes usually require it. Although fiberglass is the more economical option, it works well in the right application.
We use closed-cell spray foam for the most difficult areas. Since closed-cell doesn’t absorb water, it’s a good choice when moisture is a concern. Open-cell foam does absorb water, which is why we don’t use it in those places; instead, we use it where it is most effective, acting as a sound barrier in internal walls. When the goal is strong energy performance, spray foam is the most effective product we carry.
Since the building must be well sealed, it should have a plan for the air within it. We stock dehumidifiers and air purifiers, one of which can be plugged into a standard 110-volt socket. This way, we can address moisture control and air quality at the same time as the insulation.
